“I was a great sleeper in life until age 33 at which time I went through an extremely stressful period in life that culminated in some physical crises, which is to say a post-operative hemorrhage that caused me to lose consciousness, a heart condition and a few weeks later–shingles on my face.  Any one of these conditions is stressful but all together, while I was finishing my doctoral work was paradigm upheaval.   I learned very quickly NOT to sleep and when I did, to do so, very lightly, ostensibly to monitor my physical condition.  Although compensatory in the short term, in the long term I became a severe insomniac.  I have tried medications–do NOT take sleep medications, which will affect every aspect of life if taken long term.  Plus there are the issues of amnesia and tolerance.

I also chose to study hypnotherapy, thinking it would help me.  I bought relaxation tapes.  I followed a low inflammation diet.  I tried to exercise less, as I was an ardent runner and thought maybe all the grueling training was causing perpetual sympathetic nervous system response.  Nothing worked…

“Probably too much to write… I was going through a divorce, pulled my children out of the school they were in their whole lives to move to a town closer to my job. 3 months after moving there I lost my job and was out of work for 8 months. “I’ve just read your article “Are you living in a cave?”, thus I remembered last year, my herbalist prescribed me numerous pills; some of them were for my dietary needs, brain pills, and melatonin – but he never even mentioned anything about our body’s mechanism in producing this natural hormone melatonin, I used to be unaware of that but thanks to the internet plus your article. The Anxiety Ease cd I used for several days to fall asleep.  I don’t know how I would have survived the last week without the anxiety and the Insomnia Buster cds to calm me down.  I have come down with shingles, and it took 7 days, 5 doctors, and persistence on my part to come up with that diagnosis.  The intense pain, itching, irritation, and inflammation raised my B/P to 200/125 Thurs. night at urgent care.  I was literally afraid to go to sleep for fear I would have a stroke.  (I’ve already had a heart attack, and my B/P wasn’t that high at the time.)  So while waiting for time to go to the doc, I used the Power Nap cd, and was surprised that it relaxed me, woke me, and made me laugh when I realized that strange noise I heard was a rooster!!!

“I have been taking Ambien for YEARS…yes, YEARS! It’s initial use was legitimate! I had a weekend job where I had to get up very early so I wanted to get to sleep early. Over the years, though, I would take 5 mg of it with wine and, boy, did I enjoy THAT buzz! so I’d take it EVERY night! Heck, if I took it I got an instant relax response and knew I would sleep, right? Sometimes, true but not always. I am a 32 year old ESL teacher currently residing in South Korea. I have been an insomniac for as long as I can remember, going back to childhood, much like yourself. Like you, I have also felt for a long time that sleep ought to be something natural and easy, but somehow it has remained something illusive for me for many years. I has felt as though I’ve been dragging my listlessness around with me like a heavy weight strapped to my shoulders, inhibiting me from moving freely and easily.

However, I have also been a student of meditation for many years and have tried to keep a positive outlike my insomnia, keeping faith that in time, the right answer would come. People have asked me many times (and I have asked this question to myself) why I can’t cure my sleep problems with meditation practise. Doctors began freely prescribing sleep medications but eventually they always stopped working and so they continued to put me on something even stronger.

“The first night I tried your track I did not take the massive amount of sleeping pills (a HUGE amount in desperation, and it wasn’t working anymore. “I had used “Aldara” cream for a spot of skin cancer on my leg. Perscribed by my doctor. One of the side effects is insomnia. I thought I sleep like a baby. That will not happen to me. Well it did. The first night of use I had nightmares. Very unusual for me. I had disrupted sleep. I had to use the medicine five days on, two off. On the weekends I could sleep because I did not use the medicine. “I havent slept particularly well for 20 years! (pregnancies, followed by small children, a snoring husband and not great gut health). I had some major abdominal surgery a year ago and this further disrupted what was already not a great sleep pattern. Busy surgical wards are 24 hour environments especially when you share a bay with 5 other ill people! I was in for nearly 3 weeks and when I came home again was living in a fog of fatigue and attempting to recover. Whilst I made a good recovery, the sleep habit was still awful. I had not been sleeping good for 6 months. I was getting grumpy with my family. Things were getting worse. “My case of insomnia was and is related to restless leg syndrome. Additionally I was coming off a drug (benzodiazepines) that was prescribed to me for my rls. Sorry if this is a bit of a novel. My whole life I have always been a light sleeper and will wake up from the slightest disturbance but I could normally get a reasonable sleep.

I started experiencing a real problem with insomnia about 4 years ago. Partly it was due to having to share a bed with my partner but I also began to have a lot of trouble falling asleep. Some nights it might take me anywhere from 1-3 hours to get to sleep.

Occasionally I would lie in bed all night in a state of semi consciousness and not properly get to sleep at all…

“Just a short note to let you know what happened last night.

1. I listened to insomnia buster as I was in bed getting ready for sleep.  I fell asleep but woke up 2 hrs later. I started to read but the lights went out.

2. I got up called the light company and went back to SLEEP, only to wake up to the printer going back on. Obviously, the electricity came on.

3. I got up turned off everything and went back to bed and guess what I fell asleep.

4. 1/2 hr later the electricity went off again, something triggered me into waking up, I went to the bathroom  and yes I went back to sleep.

5.  1 hr later the electricity went back on and so  the printer start ed up and yes I woke up.

Now for the weird part……normally, I would be up all night after this happened; however, I fell back to sleep and slept for 4 hrs —I mean real sleep.   I did not take any sleeping pills as is the usual if this happens because normally, sleep will not come.  Just thought you would like to hear a success story from someone who has had insomnia all her life as in as a child.  Thank you for being there for all of us insomniacs.”

“My sleep pattern transformed during the 2 months since I purchased SleepTracks. I had been having bouts of insomnia for years but had suffered from severe lack of sleep for several weeks when I came across your website, so much so that my hands were shaking and I didn’t dare drive any distance, fearing lack of concentration may cause an accident.

My main sleep problem was waking in the early hours and being unable to get back to sleep, although occasionally I would find it difficult to get to sleep in the first place and would lie awake for hours. I often felt as though I had not slept at all.
